Churches in Goa are build by Portuguese around 400
years ago, between 16th and 17th AD when they conquered
this tiny state in India in the 16th century and ruled
it for 450 years.
Christianity was forced upon with religious fervor
by the Portuguese during the period of the "Inquisition" with
wide scale destruction of temples and this continued
till the official end of the "Inquisition" in
Goa in 1812. Most of Goa's churches were built on the
very site of former temples. The confiscated lands
of the temples were handed over to the church and the
communidades. In fact, the first Hindu temple allowed
to be constructed by the Portuguese in 300 years
was in 1818 at Panaji.

Like India, Goans are predominantly
Hindus. Temples in Goa are an important part of its
socio-cultural life. However centuries under the Portuguese
rule played a major role in the destruction and displacement
of many temples especially in the areas of the Old
Conquests in the early years. One therefore finds the
majority of Hindu Temples relocated in Ponda
Taluka today.
Some such old temples of Goa, which are noted for their
natural beauty and simple architecture, have certain basic
features, as in the days of yore, of being surrounded by
betel nut trees, coconut groves and lakes of pure water.
When you enter any of these temples you are welcomed by
the sentinels-the great pillars of light.

The imposing
forts in Goa are remnants
of the enormous castles that once guarded the territory
newly invaded by the Portuguese from
land and sea conquests. These forts are advantageously
located and well-barracked to protect the entrance to
the port or to the provinces nearby. At present, most
of these forts have become dilapidated, except for a
few that have been transformed into a prison or a hotel.
Yet, the laterite walls of these historic forts, though
covered with lichens, carry the legacy of Goa's architecture.
With a history that speaks of several rulers, it is little
wonder that one finds forts in Goa. Though limited in number,
these forts are full of adventure. Do pay them a visit;
they have stories to tell of an ancient land.
